The honest answer is both reassuring and a little evasive: a well-installed coaxial cable can easily last 20 to 30 years, and in a protected indoor environment, 50 years is entirely possible. But lifespan isn’t a number stamped on the jacket. It’s a story written by the cable’s materials, the environment it lives in, and how carefully the connectors were sealed. Some coax dies in five years because water found a pinhole; other coax outlives the building it was pulled through.


**What Actually Ages in a Coax Cable**


A coaxial cable is built like a layered cylinder: center conductor, dielectric insulator, metallic shield, and outer jacket. Each layer ages differently.


The copper center conductor is nearly immortal if kept dry. Solid copper doesn’t rust in the same destructive way as steel, and sealed inside the dielectric, it can remain bright and conductive for decades. The weak points are almost always the materials around it—particularly the outer jacket and the connector interfaces.


The dielectric, usually foam polyethylene or solid polyethylene, degrades slowly. High heat accelerates the process. In an attic that bakes at 60°C every summer, foam dielectric can become brittle and its electrical properties drift. Over many years, this shows up as signal reflections and high-frequency loss. The cable still “works” for basic signals but starts failing on high-bandwidth channels first.


The outer jacket is the primary defense. Indoor PVC jackets resist abrasion but are terrible in direct sunlight. UV radiation makes PVC chalky and cracked, eventually letting moisture inside. Outdoor-rated polyethylene (PE) jackets handle sun and temperature swings much better. For burial, a flooded jacket filled with gel blocks water migration along the braid. A flooded burial-grade cable in well-drained soil can last 20 to 30 years. A non-flooded cable buried in wet, acidic ground can fail in as little as five.


**Connectors Are the Real Weak Link**


A frustrating truth: the cable often outlives its connectors. A poorly sealed F-connector lets water creep into the braid, turning copper strands to green powder. Once corrosion climbs a few centimeters up the cable, cutting back to clean metal and replacing the connector is the only fix. In outdoor installations, dielectric grease inside the connector and a weatherproof boot over the assembly can add a decade of usable life. Without that protection, connectors can corrode in a single season.


Power over coax accelerates connector corrosion, especially in humid or coastal environments. Even small DC currents promote electrolytic action at contact points. Installers near salt water know this well: standard coax near the ocean may need connector replacement every three to five years, while marine-grade cables with tinned braids and stainless connectors push that back toward 10 to 15.


**The Environment Writes the Real Lifespan**


Location matters more than cable brand. Here’s a practical rule-of-thumb guide:


- Indoors, climate-controlled: 30 to 50 years or more, often outlasting the equipment it connects.

- Outdoors, temperate, properly sealed: 15 to 25 years for quality PE-jacketed cable.

- Outdoors, coastal or extreme UV: 10 to 15 years, with connectors possibly needing service sooner.

- Buried, flooded cable, well-drained soil: 20 to 30 years.

- Buried, non-flooded, wet or acidic soil: 5 to 10 years before moisture wrecks the shield.


These numbers assume quality cable and a proper installation. A cheap copper-clad steel center conductor, a kinked jacket, or a sharp bend radius can shorten life dramatically.


**Signs a Cable Is Nearing End of Life**


Coax rarely fails suddenly. The warning signs are gradual. High-frequency channels drop first—the modem’s upstream channels lose sync, HD satellite channels pixelate, or Ethernet backhaul speeds sag. Physically, the jacket may look cracked or feel stiff. Around outdoor connectors, greenish corrosion or water droplets after a rain are obvious red flags. A simple resistance test can confirm internal problems: a center conductor reading more than a few ohms over a typical home run suggests corrosion, while an open or short points to a physical break.


**The Bottom Line**


A coax cable’s lifespan isn’t fixed. It’s a consequence of material quality, environmental exposure, and connector care. In a dry, cool wall cavity, it may outlive you. On a sun-blasted rooftop or in a salt-sprayed coastal enclosure, it may need replacement within a decade. Treat it as infrastructure, not a consumable—install quality cable, seal the connections, and it will quietly carry signal for a very long time. Neglect those basics, and it will remind you at the worst possible moment: when the big game freezes, the security camera goes dark, or the mission-critical link drops.
